Dissertation title:
Climate Change, Ethno-nationalism, and Civil Conflict
Area: IR/CP/Methods
Committee: Zeev Moaz, Jeanette Money and Brandon Kinne

Research Focus

My dissertation examines connections between climate change and civil conflict. Much work in the policy community has emphasized a direct and powerful link between environmental resource scarcity as a result of climate change and the onset of civil war. I argue that the relationship between climate change and conflict is more complex, and is highly dependent on systematic inequalities between groups in society, and in particular on ethnic inequalities. I test these using a mix of methods including disaggregated geospatial analysis, analysis of international trade networks, and focused case studies.
