Turnout in Franklin County, Ohio

Many counties and precincts in Ohio (USA) were unprepared for the large voter turnout in the 2004 presidential election.  Long lines and waiting times were widely reported with many claiming that potential voters were discouraged from voting as a result.  Precinct-level data for the second largest county in the state – Franklin County – are available here.  The variables included in the dataset are:

  • machines: the number of voting machines in use on election day in 2004.
  • reg: the number of people registered to vote in 2004.
  • vote: the number of people who voted in the 2004 presidential election.
  • turnout2002: the percentage of registrants that voted in the 2002 midterm election.
