The 1970 Vietnam Draft Lottery
On December 1, 1969 the United States held a lottery to determine the order in which men born from 1944 through 1950 would be called for possible induction into the military in 1970. Every day of the year (from January 1 through December 31) was assigned a number from 1 to 366 through a process intended to be random. The highest number called was 195. Men with this number (or lower) who were classified as "available for military service" were called to report for possible induction.
The lottery data are available here. Note: the variable draftnum indicates the number assigned to each birthday.
